For the first time in recent memory of the International Silver Stick minor hockey competition, a Georgetown team skated away with the championship trophy, winning the Atom additional entry rep division at a tournament held in Pelham, Ont. this past weekend. Georgetown's Sports Unlimited Raiders were in a division with 13 other teams from across North America, easily winning their preliminary-round games before blanking Collingwood 8-0 in a quarter-final matchup. But the local Atoms had to be at their best to beat a team from Virginia 4-1 in the semis and then withstood a late Whitby charge to prevail 2-1 in the final. "The boys just really wanted it," said Raider head coach Murray Anderson. "They played so well defensively and when you score 39 goals and give up only six, that shows you a lot about the goaltending and the way the team plays defence. It was just a great experience all around from the pin exchange on Thursday to playing against teams from the States that they'd never seen before. "And we've got such a great group of parents, the team is just one big happy family." Preliminary round-- Georgetown 6, Chicago Crystal Lake Leafs 2; Georgetown 8, Napanee 1; Georgetown 11, New Jersey Colonials 1 Quarter-finals-- Georgetown 8, Collingwood Blackhawks 0 Semi-finals-- Georgetown 4, Virginia Wild 1 Championship-- Georgetown 2, Whitby Wildcats 1 Tournament scoring: Marty Burwell (9G, 7A); Blair Davies (9G, 5A); Brad Ranson (5G, 10A); Callum Biehn (5G, 3A); Matthew Hopson (3G, 4A); Dane Firhoj (2G, 10A); Matthew Carr (2G, 6A); Lucas Jenkins (2G, 3A); Jake Spence (G, 6A); Stevie Rosa (G, 2A); Ryan Bourgeois, Brodie Briscoe (3A); Mark Bowen, Mitchell Catoen & Josh Fera (2A); Tyler Anderson (2.5W); Joe Wallace (2.5W, SO); Josh Stetchly (W).
