Haley Veronyak of the Halton Hills Blue Fins competes in the girls' 10-11 year-old division at the recent Gord Bassett Invitational meet held at the Georgetown Indoor Pool.

The Georgetown Indoor Pool was invaded recently by almost 300 swimmers from around central Ontario for the First Annual Gord Bassett Invitational. This is a traditional Halton Hills Blue Fins swim meet renamed this year in honour of Bassett, who has been involved with the local club and with youth swimming in Ontario for over 20 years. Bassett got involved with the club in the mid-1980s when his daughter swam for the team. Bassett immediately found his niche in volunteering for officiating, and gradually worked his was up to his Level 5 Master Official designation, and is currently only one of 50 such designees in Ontario. He has seen the Blue Fins evolve from a predominantly recreational swim club to a purely competitive club who now regularly have swimmers qualify for provincial and national championships. Meanwhile, in the pool, the Blue Fins provided plenty for the home side to cheer about. The competitive group picked up 81 top-three finishes, including 37 first-place ribbons to out-point the five other competing teams for an overall team victory. On the pre-competitive side, the Blue Fins also shone, scoring 41 top three finishes including 15 first-place ribbons. Top finishers in the pre-competitive group were: Girls 9 & Under Victoria Plackoska--2nd 25M freestyle Aysia Leckie--3rd 25M freestyle Brooke McGowan-- 2nd 50M freestyle, 25M butterfly Aurora Zuraw-- 1st 25M backstroke, 3rd 25M butterfly Kelly Smith-- 1st 25M butterfly, 25M breaststroke, 2nd 25M backstroke Boys 9 & Under Joshua Rousseau-- 1st 25M freestyle Calum McAlpine-- 2nd 25M freestyle Ryan Waddick-- 3rd 25M freestyle Matthew Fox-- 1st 50M freestyle, 2nd 25M backstroke, 3rd 25M breaststroke Matthew Burch-Forgie-- 1st 100M freestyle,
