Wanted: Someone to fix leaky roof

When it rains, Helena DeSalvo is not a happy person. For more than three weeks, she's been trying to get someone to repair a leak in her roof-- without any responses. "I've called seven different local roofers," said DeSalvo from outside her Eighth Line home. "Two said they'd drop by the next day-- one even set a time-- 11 a.m.-- and not one has showed up. "I even contacted two roofers on the Internet and requested they come out to look at it-- again, no one even returns my message. Why do they have a website if they aren't going to respond to an e-mail?" DeSalvo was especially annoyed when she called one roofer and the girl on the other end said they probably wouldn't send someone out to price `such a small job' since they probably wouldn't get the job anyway. "How can she say that?" said DeSalvo, "If someone came out to give me an estimate, they'd probably be hired to fix it." The problem started with a damp spot showing up around the living room fireplace about three weeks ago. DeSalvo's son got up on the roof and caulked the flashing around the chimney, and that stopped some of the leak, but the water still keeps coming in when there's a heavy rainfall.
For the past three weeks, the chimney on Helena DeSalvo;s Eighth Line home has been leaking inside the living room because it has some loose flashing. Unfortunately, she can't get a roofing contractor to come out and repair the leak.
Since then, another leak has started around one of the windows, resulting in the leak extending to the basement, and they had had some damp spots on the carpet where the moisture has made its way along the fireplace, right to the basement floor. "The problem seems to be the flashing," said DeSalvo, "But I can't get anyone to come out to even look at it to see what it needs." In the meantime, the recent heavy rains have made the situation more pressing. "I'm not sure what to do," said DeSalvo, "These people (roofing contractors) are in business to provide a service, yet they can't even take the courtesy to return a call. It's very annoying."
