Acton residents are encouraged to pick up a few extra groceries this week for the Acton Foodshare Annual Food Drive on Saturday (April 22). Scouts, Guides and Calvinist Cadets will be going door to door throughout Acton sometime after 9 a.m. to pick up the food. Residents are asked to have their donations in bags outside at the front of their homes by 8:30 a.m. Monetary donations can also be given to the youth at the door. Some of the most-needed items include canned meats, stews and fish (especially tuna), dried milk, canned baked beans, dry and canned pasta, dried milk, peanut butter, jam, ketchup, coffee, tea and sugar. This is the second year for a spring food drive in Acton and Arlene Humphries, chairperson of the food bank, says it works well for them, providing food when its most needed. Humphries said they don't have a goal set for the amount of food they would like to collect, but past drives have brought in between 8,000 and 10,000 lbs. "Whatever food we get, we're happy with," said Humphries. She said the food bank currently serves approximately 200 people, 90 of whom are children. Humphries said the food bank is in the process of moving to its new home at 350 Queen St., located at the intersection of Churchill Rd. across from the fire station. She said the tentative opening date for the food bank in the new location is May 2. The hours will remain the same (Tuesdays 9 a.m. to noon). The food bank's phone number will remain 519853-0457.
