"In most cases," says the Kincardine Review, Hugh Clark M.P.P. editor, "agitations for local option are bred by violations of the license laws, and the liquor trade in such cases is its own enemy. In Southampton a local option by-law was defeated last winter. So tickled was the trade over the result that one hotelkeeper at least opened up his bar when the result was known and free liquor was dispensed. Many citizens who voted against local option that day were made sorry for it by this act of wanton disregard of decency and law, and were only too glad of a chance to recast their votes on the question." Dr. Nixon M.P.P. for Halton, also agrees that the keeping of the present law will probably have the effect of dealying agitations for local option.
