Death From Lock-jaw.
The sudden death on Saturday afternoon of Miss Etta Bingham, daughter of Mr. Robt. Bingham, caused feelings of general gloom throughout the community. Four or five weeks ago deceased stepped upon a board containing a rusty nail which pierced the sole of her slipper and wounded her foot. Though painful at the time she said little about it and in a few days the wound healed. Three weeks ago last Monday she was taken very ill and the medical men who were called in discovered unmistakable evidence of lock-jaw. She received the best known treatment for this mysterious ailment, and much careful nursing and up to the moment of her death was thought to be progressing as favorably as could be expected under the circumstances. At noon on Saturday she took hearty nourishment, but an hour or so afterward passed peacefully away. She was a bright and intelligent girl just budding into young womanhood. She was a comfort to her parents, beloved by all her associates, faithful to her duties in the home where she resided, and withall a humble, confiding and consistent christian. During her illness it was a benediction to have the privilege of conversing with her and witnessing her happy frame of mind and abiding trust in Jesus. When informed of the serious nature of her illness, and the possibility of its fatal termination she evinced no alarm, but was she said quite ready for the Master's call. The entire community manifested deep and practical sympathy with the bereaved family. The funeral on Monday was very largely attended, the occasion being improved by Rev. Dr. Gifford in a short service at the residence.
